CHOIR

I love to hear a choir. I love the humanity...to see the faces of real people devoting themselves to a piece of music. I like the teamwork. It makes me feel optimistic about the human race when I see them cooperating like that.

The CVU Choral Program currently consists of three choral ensembles that meet during the school day: Chorus, Concert Choir, and Chamber Choir, as well as an auditioned, co-curricular ensemble, Madrigal Singers. Students in all ensembles are invited to participate in at least three yearly concerts, outreach performances at local schools and community events, state-wide and regional festivals, and yearly performance tours.

Chorus is our foundational choral ensemble primarily composed of 9th grade singers. This course is taught in two sections, which allows for plenty of small-group instruction in order to provide each student with the personalized instruction they need to meet their individual goals. Both sections come together to perform at concerts and events and there are even opportunities to sing with the upper choirs throughout the year. The goal of this ensemble is to meet new friends with an interest in music and develop vocal and musicianship skills that will help you become a confident performer.

Concert Choir is a choral ensemble for 10th-12th grade singers. This ensemble sings a wide variety of repertoire and begins to go deeper into advanced vocal and musicianship skills, like improvisation, sight singing, and composition. This ensemble is the perfect place to hone your singing skills while developing friendships with other classmates over the course of your time at CVU. This is a class that keeps on giving year after year, so repeat enrollment is highly encouraged.

Chamber Choir is an advanced choral ensemble for 11th-12th grade singers. This ensemble sings advanced repertoire that prepares singers for music at the collegiate level. This is the perfect ensemble for students who want to take their vocal and musicianship skills to the next level, whether that be auditioning for choral festivals and scholarships, like the Vermont All-State Music Festival, or preparing for advanced courses, like AP Music Theory. In this course, we will dive deep into choral singing techniques and skill development in improvisation, sight singing, and composition. This class is a must for those who are passionate about music and yearly registration is highly encouraged.

Madrigal Singers is an auditioned, co-curricular choral ensemble for 9th-12th grade singers. This ensemble sings a wide variety of a cappella repertoire for local school and community events, most notably Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation’s Polar Express Train Ride and the Madrigal Festival, a statewide choral festival held in downtown Burlington. Other events include singing at local retirement communities, senior centers, schools, and churches. We hope to expand our offerings this year by presenting a Madrigal Dinner, a Renaissance-style dinner-and-a-show featuring the Madrigal Singers. This ensemble is perfect for our most dedicated singers who want to make music with friends while giving back to our community.
