Buy Your Tickets for the Spring One Acts!
The word theater has a long history, deriving from the Ancient Greek word theasthai, which means to behold. The spring one-act plays at Champlain Valley Union High School have their own history and traditions, and the plays most definitely will be something to behold.
This year’s plays: a one-act comedy by Christopher Durang, The Actor’s Nightmare, and a truncated one-act version of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. In the spirit of collaboration, there are five student co-directors for the two plays, two stage managers, and an assistant stage manager who is also in charge of props and publicity.
By tradition the spring plays are wholly produced by the students. They direct, act, operate the lighting and sound, make all the costumes, do hair and make-up, create media/publicity pieces, and design and build the sets. Many students have an opportunity to contribute in a multitude of ways. With their focus on inclusivity, and a commitment to creative collaboration, that’s just the way the CVU students like it.
Gabbie LindenMeyr, Ian Story, and Eric Carroll are co-directors for The Actor’s Nightmare. Carroll was the one to suggest Durang’s play, and the others quickly agreed. “It’s a wonderful show. I’ve always wanted to direct a comedy,” said Carroll. Story nodded and smiled in agreement.

Rory McDermott and Francesca Krol share directorial responsibilities for Hamlet. When asked how Hamlet can work as a one-act play, McDermott said, “We still have all the important contextual bits that tell the original story.”

Krol added, “We’re putting a lot of trust in the actors, particularly in Clark Clark who plays Hamlet, to emphasize the aspects of the play that aren’t included. I’ve always viewed directing as a very inclusive process with the actors, so it’s been a team effort.”
Asked for any personal insights about the whole experience, director Gabbie LindenMeyr noted, “Everything is different than I thought it would be. Blocking, for instance. Blocking is harder than acting!”
Will Richardson, assistant stage manager said, “I’ve worked with adult and student directors for various productions, and working with student directors is always really fun—especially when you know them. The collaboration tends to be more fun from a tech point of view. Also, the student directors don’t tend to ask for quite as much, technically.” Izora Hart, one of the stage managers, said, “I’m really impressed with the entire tech team.” (The entire set for Hamlet was assembled in less than a month.)
Performances are at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6, and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7 at the CVU High School Theater. Purchase tickets at TicketSource, or at the door. (Check the ticket site first to ensure the show is not sold out.) Online/advance tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for students, children, and faculty, and $11 and $9 at the door.

Amélie Summer Camp

In the spring of 2022, CVU students learned that our fall musical would be Amélie. Two weeks before school resumed in August, dozens of students joined Mr. Brownell and me (Stacy) to audition for this whimsical story.
Camp officially kicked off with a read-through of the show, with the next few days devoted to the musical score. Students worked their way through every song with Mr. Brownell and set a goal to master and memorize the opening sequence of the show. An intention they met! By the following Friday, 44 students performed the first four numbers with choreography for the CVU faculty and staff.
Behind the scenes our tech crews were hard at work. Set pieces were being built and painted, sewing machines were on the move, and paper mache was everywhere. Jeff Tobrocke’s shop had been properly dusted in a layer of newspaper and colored tissue.
Week 2 meant movement. Students welcomed our choreographer, Carla Wuthrich, and they hit the ground running. In total, nine songs were choreographed over the first three days. Thursday the cast enjoyed a movement workshop which embraced all levels of experience to deepen and polish each students’ abilities.  And all the while, focus remained on preparation for Friday’s preview.
Picture
Layered into this process was the beginning of a larger conversation on content and purpose. Following the read-through, we began to assess what was at stake in the telling of this story. What it meant to survive childhood trauma and neglect.  The psychological impact over time. Isolation. Cycles.
Breaking cycles.
Through the beauty of imagination and the surreal, Amélie manages to balance what might otherwise be heavy content with levity and joy. What a gift in itself. The insights from these students were profound. And as we all came to a unifying understanding of the material and its importance, individual character work began. Much fun was had diving into characters' history, intention, motivation, even the way they walked.
Picture
Crews were still at work and pieces were taking shape. Waves and carousel horses from paper mache; even a massive goldfish to be worn by Addison Hoopes (playing the part of Fluffy). Dresses were sewn and the raspberries were ripe. It was time for the preview!
On our last day of camp the cast and crew were abuzz with last minute touches and sharpening of moves to ready the space for the faculty. After nearly 100 hours of hands-on rehearsal and preparation these students were thrilled to share their joy for the arts with the teachers who help them most to grow. We were all so grateful for the experience and everyone who helped to make it possible.
Above all, this story is about connection. How one kind deed offered can ripple its way through a community. A message we are eager to dive more deeply into in this uplifting and  creative project.

Stacy Chadwell is CVU's Theater Director. Come see Amélie, the charming musical based on the beloved French film, November 11, 12, and 13th, at the CVU Theater.
